Jonas is a common male name in many Western world countries and Northeast Africa. It is primarily used as a first name, but also occurs as a surname. It is particularly frequent in Germany, Israel, Ethiopia, the Netherlands, Flanders and Scandinavia. Jonas Bondi
Jonas Bondi (July 9, 1804 – March 11, 1874) was a German-American rabbi and newspaper editor. Life Bondi was born on July 9, 1804, in Dresden, Electorate of Saxony, Saxony. He was a descendent of Jonathan Eybeschutz. Bondi received a theological education and attended the Charles University, University of Prague. He then worked in his father's business for many years. But when his business failed, he immigrated to America with his wife and daughters. Rabbi Nathan Marcus Adler, Nathan Adler, the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain and one of Bondi's former teachers, gave a recommendation on the basis of his Jewish knowledge. The recommendation made its way to the officers of Ansche Chesed in New York City, and in 1858 he was made Preacher and Chief Rabbi of the congregation. Jonas Lars Björkman (; born 23 March 1972) is a Swedish former professional tennis player. He is a former world No. 1 in doubles, and also a former world No. 4 in singles. Jonas Biliūnas (11 April 1879 – 8 December 1907) was a Lithuanian writer, poet, and a significant contributor to the national awakening of Lithuania in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Jonas Basanavičius
Jonas Basanavičius (, ; 23 November 1851 – 16 February 1927) was an activist and proponent of the Lithuanian National Revival. He participated in every major event leading to the independent Lithuanian state and is often given the informal honorific title of the " Patriarch of the Nation" () for his contributions. Born to a family of farmers, Basanavičius was to become a priest but instead chose to study medicine at the Moscow Medical Academy.
